Dionne Reid is a singer making a name for herself on the underground UK scene. Her music combines R&B, Soul, Reggae and House flavours. She released her debut EP S.M.I.L.E last summer and when you listen to it, that's about all you want to do! The natural charisma of Reid just shines through on every song. Her vocals are smooth and light. And she manages to strike a great balance between honesty and fun. S.M.I.L.E is a joy to listen to- just another great example of UK talent!!

With the rumours of a Destiny's Child reunion still floating about Ms Rowland and the other DC ladies look set to capitalize on the buzz as all three are expected to release solo material in 2013.Well, the other girls had better come up with something else because it seems Ms Rowland has found her stride with the super sexy R&B tracks and she does them so well.

FLASHBACK: Daniel Merriweather- Love & War
Australian Singer Daniel Merriweather released his impressive debut album Love & War in 2007. Produced by Mark Ronson the critically acclaimed album peaked at number 2 on the UK albums chart. Merriweather's deep grainy vocals sounded perfect over Ronson,s retro sounding production. The album features the two singles Change and Red and also features a duet with Adele on the song Water and a Flame
Love & War is a quality New Soul album, I remember being really excited about Daniel Merriweather when I heard first Red, It's been six years since Love & War hope he is somewhere working on some new stuff, he's a great talent.
NEW MUSIC:Artful- Unfinished Business EP
Artful A.K.A Mark Hill is one half of the 2-step Garage production duo Artful Dodger, who are responsible for many of Craig David's early hits. Now Artful has stepped out on his own to release Unfinished Business ,a free six track EP that revisits his garage roots. It's a comfortable collection of classic sounding soulful Garage and it goes without saying that the production is spotless. There are no surprises on this EP but there's not meant to be. This is unfinished business in every sense of the phrase. It's all about late 90's early 2000's nostalgia. Old Skool Garage heads, this one is for you, enjoy.

NEW VIDEO: Justin Timberlake- Suit & Tie [Lyric Video]
So it's a only a lyric video, but not the type you've seen before! It might as well be the official one. JT shows off his completely creative swagger, right here.
WEB STUFF: StereoTypes- Typical Hip Hop
Here's another instalment of the web series StereoTypes. So, I'm a little obsessed with web shows at the moment but that's only because they are totally great. Have a watch of this episode where host Ryan Hall asks New Yorkers about stereotypes in Hip Hop music. Look out for the old lil West Indian lady- cute! StereoTypes airs on Pharrell Williams' i am OTHER channel.
*Warning: contains some very naughty words, but if you listen to Hip Hop you've heard them all before*

WEB STUFF: Jabari Presents- Issa Rae
Film maker Jabari Johnson interviewed writer Issa Rae. He caught up with the creator of the popular web sitcom series Awkward Black Girl for his own web series called Jabari Presents. Issa Rae talks about her inspirations for creating the show and what the future holds. It's really interesting piece- it's very inspiring to hear about the origins and rapid growth of a show that only exists online. I might just give up on TV altogether! I'm finding more and more great shows- the type of shows that I never even realised I wanted to see. Obviously, the Internet offers certain freedoms that TV cannot. Issa Rae mentions that she has turned down offers from TV production companies for ABG, fearing that they would want to change the show too much. And while the Internet allows for a lot of quite crappy programmes it does also allow for some true gems with characters and issues that you just wouldn't find anywhere else. Knowing where to look is the key- Awkward Black Girl and Jabari Presents are two really good starting points.
New Music: Daley- Remember Me (ft Jessie J)
Ok, apologies, if you have been listening to the radio, this track might not feel brand new. It was released late last year but I still want to give some shine to the supremely talented Daley. He has been busy touring the country with US singer, Miguel this month. His first official single, Remember Me is a new take on soulful funk. It features vocal powerhouse, Jessie J singing the familiar hook. The track samples Mica Paris' Should've Known Better and Marlena Shaw's Woman of The Ghetto. It's a great debut, a bit different to what I expected but that's good, I like that Daley appears to be the kind of artist to want to keep his fans on their toes, not give away too much and not play on the inevitable- white boy does R&B- comparisons to JT, Jon B and Robin Thicke. I'm excited to see and hear what's to come from the Mancunian Singer this year.

New Music: Disclosure ft AlunaGeorge- White Noise
Electro-dance outfit Disclosure recruited Aluna Francis of AlunaGeorge for this new track. It's an infectiously chilled out track got a with an old skool Garage flavour. Nice.
WEB STUFF: Issa Rae's Awkward Moments
I came across Some funny awkward moment skits between Issa Rae and broadcaster Katie Couric. The two clips feature recognisable situations- who hasn't had a moment where they've laughed along with something that they actually don't understand or let someone pronounce a word wrongly while you struggle to find a moment to correct them! Funny socially awkward moments, from the original awkward black girl- enjoy!
Cant wait for the next episode of Awkward Black Girl coming up this week on i am OTHER! keep a look out for it!
LIVE GEMS: Bluey Robinson- True Blue
Bluey Robinson recently did a stellar performance of his track True Blue from his latest mixtape, The Late Shift, which was released last year (check out my review here). He performed the song for the YouTube live music showcasing series Reload Sessions. It's a quality performance, from the charismatic South Londoner. Feast you ears...
Poetry Buzz: LionHeart
From: Vocals and Verses.com |
Check out this spoken word poet. He goes by the name of LionHeart and has been doing the rounds on the underground scene. I first saw him at Vocals and Verses in August last year and I've seen him perform lots of times since. He performs thought provoking poetry about topics such as love, sex, politics and education, with effortless cool and elegance. He has also produced great video visuals to accompany some of his pieces, like engaging poem, They Shot Things. For me though, nothing beats hearing poetry live and LionHeart has performance down! You get energy, education and most of all you get heart! Have a watch of the video for his poem No Make-up Today.

Flashback: Childish Gambino- Camp
This is a bit of a cheat 'Flashback' because it's only from like 18 months ago (if that) but I'm doing it because it was my intention to do an 'Introducing' post on Childish Gambino but I never got around to it *slaps wrist*. Childish Gambino is one of my favourite rappers right now. The 29 year old is also a scriptwriter and actor and comedian. His debut 2011 album Camp was hot because it said something different: he has all the flavour and energy of more typical rappers but he is talking about relationships, growing up being one of the only black kids at a white school, and about the awkwardness and anxiety of feeling like you're constantly straddling two world's. He is super witty as he makes shrewd observations about society. It's a solid album with interesting flows and excellent production too. Here's one of my favourites, Heartbeat.

New Music: Marie Dahlstrom- Search
Marie Dahlstrom is a Scandinavian Soul singer who has been doing the rounds on the London gig circuit. Search is her latest single. This track really showcases the rich, bluesy texture of her voice. She released her debut EP Feelings in 2011 and is currently working on her next project. She has definitely whipped up a lot of support on the live event scene and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from this new talented singer during 2013.

New Music: Ciara- Wake-Up, Turn- Up
Ciara releases her new single Wake Up, Turn Up in the midst of the hyped up returns of some massive stars. It's OK but that's it, underwhelming to say the least. I've always felt Ciara is one of those artists who is always on the edge of greatness but for some reason she has never properly blown up. I don't know quite what it is about her that isn't connecting: Whether is the actual music or the promotion etc. I can't put my finger on it but I think real savvy soul searching needs to be done. She could be an awesome entertainer with the right inspiration/direction or something! See what you think...

New Music: Justin Timberlake ft Jay- Z- Suit & Tie
So 2013 is not just the year of the comebacks- we've had those before- remember when Steps came back?? *shudder*.No, 2013 is the year of the music comebacks you actually want to see! First Sugababes, then Destiny's Child and now Justin Timberlake has returned to music after six years with "Suit & Tie" sophisticated track with a welcoming summer vibe produced by long time collaborator Timberland and featuring the eternal Rapper of the moment Jay Z. The song has classic Justin flavour with a twist of maturity. It packs a bigger punch than DC's lack- lustre offering. "Suit & Tie" is the first single off his forthcoming third studio album entitled The 20/20 Experience.

EP REVIEW: Jacob Banks- The Monologue
I have been raving about this singer for months now and earlier this week Jacob Banks released his EP and it just happens to be great!
Emerging artist Jacob Banks kicked off New Year
with the release of his hotly anticipated debut EP The Monologue. The 21 year old singer/songwriter from
Birmingham spent a lot of last year gigging around the country. After winning
the MOBO Unsung title for his
region, he went on to perform at many of London’s popular showcases and has also
opened for Daley and Plan B. With steadily increasing
support from music fans and fellow artists alike, it is fair to say that Jacob
Banks is the man of the new music moment.
The Monologue is a
soulfully introverted exploration of Banks’ life experiences. He gives
coming-of-age perspectives on personal aspirations and relationships as well as
social issues. This delightfully mellow
collection of songs powerfully exhibit Banks’ commanding vintage soul vocals charged
with modern British experience and edge.
The Monologue explores notions of personal evolution, coming of
age and growth. The poignant guitar led ballad, “Homecoming” offers a vivid
perspective of the emotions associated with an individual’s desire to break
away and pursue a life away from the security of a family setting. The opening
track, “Worthy” is a superbly layered song, full of interesting musical
changes. The addition of Banks’
haunting, throaty vocal gives the tune an engaging, brooding intensity. The
song centres on the idea of the pursuit of redemption and the growing fear that
past mistakes could jeopardise future aspirations. The catchy hook echoes
through the song: ‘I feel worthy somehow, please, I don’t want to go down... The
new world is calling me now, please don’t let me go down’.
The EP incorporates elements of the Pop-Soul sound from the
1950’s and 60’s. The tracks “Hostage” and “Something Beautiful” are great
examples of the Motown Sound’s influence on his music. Both these songs have
the flavour of Smokey Robinson’s
hit, “Who’s Loving You”. Music production
aside, the style and tone of Banks’ voice, alone has the power to transport you
to the 1950’s Soul- Gospel era. On the track “Dear Simone” you’d be forgiven
for thinking you were listening to a previously unreleased recording from an
artist like Sam Cooke. The smooth
rasp of Banks’ voice as he sings the opening phrase is reminiscent of Cooke’s
emotively sombre intro on “A Change Is Gonna Come”. And Banks has the balance
just right- he manages to emulate this style without being overly derivative.
Banks contrasts this retro edge with current, socially conscious
lyrics about life and youth culture from his perspective. “Kids on the Corner” is
a cautionary tale about how easy it is for disaffected youths to get lost in
the negative trappings of an inner city life. The song “YOLO”, he subverts the
meaning of the infamous abbreviation popularised by Drake in 2011. For Banks,
YOLO (You Only Live Once) is not a lame justification for reckless behaviour. Instead,
this percussion-heavy track encourages caution because ‘There’s only one life
to live, don’t take it for granted’.
Banks is an intriguing contradiction: he’s a young, new
artist using classic soul styles to create something brand new and socially relevant.
His music is so engaging that when you listen, it feels like you’re being taken
back and forward at the same time. The Monologue is an impressive
collection of stylish, mature, relatable songs. The EP is tonic for the heart,
mind and soul. Banks is part of a
current wave of new, brilliantly talented artists that are emerging on the UK
scene, right now. It’s easy to imagine
him achieving the kind of success that great Soul artists like Seal and Terrence Trent D’arby have enjoyed because he really is that good.

New Music: Frank Ocean ft Outkast- Pink Matter (REMIX)
Both Big Boi and Andre 3000 feature on a remixed version of Pink Matter off Frank Ocean's critically acclaimed album Channel Orange. This track originally featured Andre 3000 anyway, but the inclusion of Big Boi adds an interesting layer to this dreamy, indulgent, sexy track. Together Andre and Big Boi steal the show from Ocean, a little bit: They each have this amazing way of putting their stamp on any record they're featured on so Ocean's vocal seems, somewhat marginalised to the point where he sounds like the featured artist on an Outkast track rather than vice versa! None the less it's a great remix.

NEW MUSIC: Destiny's Child- Nuclear
No, that's not a typo, you read right: new music from Destiny's Child. It's been eight years but the world's favourite independent women are back! They have been recording new material and a song called "Nuclear" surfaced on the online, last night. The song is a little mild for me, I imagined the girls would make their official comeback with a song that packs a bigger punch. See what you think.

Poetry Buzz: G.R.E.E.d.S
South London poet, GREEdS at the Vocals and Verses Christmas Special in December. He is a great talent I'm sure some of you haven't really considered poetry since daydreaming during English lit classes about Keats and Tennyson but, let me tell you there is a thriving urban poetry scene in London with super talented artists waxing lyrical about everything from love and sex to poverty and corruption. GREEdS is one such artist. Check out this piece about growing up in South London set to a nostalgic 90's beat.
TRAILER: Beyonce- Life Is But a Dream
2013 is the year Beyonce Knowles is coming back into the public eye. So, ahead of her performance at this year's Superbowl in February. She has filmed a new documentary about her life and times. The usually fiercely private star opens up about the pressure to balance her professional, celebrity and personal persona. Looks like we're going to get a fantastic insight into what it's like to be one of the world's best selling female entertainers.

New Music: MKS- BOYS
Recognise these faces?? Yay! The Sugababes are back! The original (and the best) line up of the band Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobahn Donaghy reunited last year and began recording new material. On New Years Eve they performed their first gig together in twelve years. They recently released an acapella version of their forthcoming single, "Boys". They look and sound great!

Web Series: StereoTypes- Embarrassing Music
StereoTypes is a great Web series which is executive produced by Pharrell Williams and features on his i am other channel. It follows presenter Ryan hall as he walks around the streets of America getting views from the public on various things from interracial dating to money management. This episode Hall tries to get people to reveal their guilty music pleasures. I thought it was pretty interesting is there even such a thing as embarrassing music? Embarrassing to who? See what you think...

New Music: Azealia Banks- BBD
Gossip Note: As I write there is a Twitter beef going on between Azealia and Angel Haze. After Banks, rather territorially commented on people who falsely claim to be from New York, (They do that, presumably because it sounds a lot cooler than them saying they're from somewhere like Iowa). Anyhow, Haze took this as a personal jibe and so the back and forth began. Still not sure whether these tiffs between rappers, (especially female rappers) actually more harm than good!
